Journey to Dhanushkodi: India's Ghost Town
Dhanushkodi is a strip of land that separates the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. Destroyed in the 1964 cyclone, this once-thriving town is now a beautiful, haunting ghost town surrounded by endless blue seas. Known as the "Lands End" of India, it is situated just 18 kilometers from Sri Lanka across the shallow shoals of Rama Setu (Adam's Bridge).
The Tragical History of the 1964 Cyclone
Prior to December 1964, Dhanushkodi was a bustling port town with a railway station, customs office, post office, schools, and a regular ferry service to Talaimannar in Sri Lanka. On the night of December 22, 1964, a massive cyclone with winds exceeding 280 km/h struck the town. A high tidal wave washed away the entire town and a passenger train crossing the Pamban bridge. Following this tragedy, the government declared Dhanushkodi unfit for human habitation, earning it the title of a "Ghost Town."
How to Reach Dhanushkodi
Reaching Dhanushkodi is a scenic journey. A newly built, smooth pitch road (National Highway 87) runs all the way to Arichal Munai (the final tip). You have two primary transport options:
- Private Taxi / Auto-Rickshaw: You can easily hire local taxis or autos from Rameswaram town. A round-trip taxi package typically costs between ₹1,500 and ₹2,200.
- Personal Car / Bike: Visitors can drive their own vehicles directly to the land's end during opening hours. The drive features sea on both sides of the road.
Key Things to See in Dhanushkodi
- The Ruined Church & School: The skeletal brick structures of the St. Anthony's Church and the primary school stand as silent witnesses to the storm's force.
- Arichal Munai (Lands End): The final point of the Indian peninsula where you can stand on a circular viewing deck and look out at the vast ocean confluence.
- Rama Setu (Adam's Bridge) Viewpoint: Observe the linear chain of limestone shoals stretching towards Sri Lanka, visible during low tide.
Important Travel Tips & Guidelines
Since Dhanushkodi is an isolated border area, visitors must adhere to strict local rules:
- Timings: The checkpost opens at 07:00 AM and closes at 05:30 PM. No vehicles are permitted to stay past sunset.
- Food & Water: Carry sufficient drinking water and snacks. There are only a few temporary thatch shacks selling tender coconuts and fried fish.
- Safety: Do not swim in the ocean. The currents are extremely strong and unpredictable, especially at the confluence point.
